The director of the Institute for Development and Innovation, Nenad Jevtović, participated as a panelist in the conference, the topic of which was the even and inclusive economic empowerment of regions in the Republic of Serbia. The meeting entitled “Regional development of Serbia – smart specialization and smart regions” was organized by the National Convention on the European Union in partnership with the European Movement in Serbia and Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Serbia. Apart from the agreement of the participants that it is necessary to continuously strengthen the capacity of local authorities in relation to this topic, as well as the fact that for economic development, the synergy of the academic community, the non-governmental and private sector, as well as the state itself, is necessary, Nenad Jevtović saw the problem from the perspective of demographic changes. Taking into account that demographic changes require a pragmatic approach and the awareness that not all places in Serbia can survive and deal with the development of high-tech businesses, he emphasized: “We must be ready to make sacrifices and it is not possible for all parts of the country to develop in the same way and that there is an innovation incubator everywhere. There will be a possibility of losses in some municipalities”. Also, the director of the Institute expressed the view that there is no single answer to the question of economic development and that the existing potential of a certain region should be taken into account when designing the direction of its development.
