The Institute for Development and Innovation would like to congratulate all the young people in Serbia on International youth day giving the message to the rest of society – Investing in the youth we invest in our future.

On this day we would like to remind everyone that the unemployment rate in Serbia for individuals between the ages of 15 and 24 was 32.2% in the first quartal of 2021. The high rate creates the main issue the young individuals face after completing their education – finding a job.

As the most mobile part of the society, many of them emigrate from Serbia and the region mostly to member countries of the European Union. OECD believes that between 15 and 49 thousand people left Serbia between 2012 and 2016. The migration of the young population costs Serbian society between 1.2 and 2 billion euros in potential GDP.

Through the research titled “Costs of the youth migration” The Institute for Development and Innovation pointed out the economic losses society faces when the youth emigrates.
